"The Face of Bangladesh's July Revolution"
Who Was Sharif Osman Hadi?
Sharif Osman Hadi was born in Nalchity, Jhalakathi to a madrasa teacher. He pursued his higher education in Political Science at Dhaka University and later became a lecturer at the University of Scholars. At just 32 years old, he emerged as one of the most prominent voices of Bangladesh's historic July 2024 uprising.
Hadi played a pivotal role in the student-led protests of July 2024, which initially began against the controversial job quota system that reserved positions for descendants of 1971 freedom fighters. The protests escalated when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered brutal crackdowns on demonstrators, resulting in nearly 1,400 deaths and over 20,000 injuries before her eventual ouster and flight to India on August 5, 2024.
Hadi served as the spokesperson for Inqilab Mancha (Platform for Revolution), a political platform born from the July uprising. Under his leadership, the movement gained considerable influence, articulating student groups' demands while challenging the existing political system. He was known as an outspoken critic of foreign interference in Bangladesh's domestic affairs.
Hadi was planning to stand as an independent parliamentary candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the Bijoynagar area in the upcoming elections, expected in February 2026. His vision was to bring meaningful change to Bangladesh's political landscape through democratic participation.
On December 12, 2025, tragedy struck when two masked assailants on a motorcycle shot Hadi in the head while he was traveling in an auto-rickshaw in Dhaka, shortly after leaving a mosque. The bullet entered above his left ear and exited through the right side of his head, causing severe brain stem damage.
Hadi was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where doctors performed emergency brain surgery. His condition was described as extremely critical. He was later moved to Evercare Hospital and airlifted to Singapore General Hospital's Neurosurgical ICU on December 15 for advanced treatment. Despite all efforts, Hadi succumbed to his injuries on December 18, 2025.
Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus declared a one-day state mourning on December 20, 2025. The national flag was hoisted at half-mast across all government offices, educational institutions, and Bangladesh missions abroad. Dr. Yunus stated: "Sharif Osman Hadi, the fearless frontline fighter of the July Uprising and spokesperson of the Inqilab Mancha, is no more among us. His death is an irreparable loss for the nation."
Inqilab Mancha announced his martyrdom on Facebook: "In the struggle against foreign hegemony, Allah has accepted the great revolutionary Osman Hadi as a martyr." His death sparked massive protests across Bangladesh, with demonstrators demanding justice and accountability. Hadi's sacrifice continues to inspire millions who believe in the ideals of the July Revolution.
